Toledo: A city to discover

Toledo is a municipality and city of Spain , capital of the homonymous province and of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha . In addition, it was the old seat of the Court of Castile .  The municipality is considered individually as a region in the division made by the Provincial Council ,  although from a strictly physical geography point of view the city is the gateway to the La Sagra natural region , which has traditionally been considered to begin in the own door of Bisagra.

Toledo,  declared a World Heritage Site, does not allow us to choose between the sources of its culture and its history: all of it is a mixture of times and inhabitants, of cultures and religions, all styles are in its monuments, all secular activities are represented in it and his visit enhances the soul, intelligence and culture. Toledo does not leave indifferent and we are stuck in the memory as the place to always return and we will never finish knowing.

Embraced by the meander of the Tagus, its geographical position keeps the causes of its longevity. The man always found in the Toro del Tajo a place of strategic privilege to settle. High and surrounded by the natural moat of the river, it leaves no doubt of its defensive and surveillance location. Therefore, some of the important monuments are related to its military structure: the Alcazar, the walls or the Castle of San Servando …

Toledo stands as a tolerant city that understood to be chosen by different towns that inhabited it and knew how to respect its steps, still conserving important traces that have given it the nickname of City of the Three Cultures .

The brief narrative determined to point out few places not to exclude those that certainly do not deserve to be offended, ends as it began, narrating to the traveler that there are a hundred toledos to enjoy: el del Greco, the nocturnal, the craftsman, the Jew, the literary … The city invites you to stay and taste calmly the plot of your past, in the modernity of its present, which offers us many possibilities to spend more than a day and yet … want to return.

It is known as “The Imperial City” for having been the headquarters of the court of Charles I and also as “the city of the three cultures”, having been populated for centuries by Christians, Jews and Muslims. Toledo, with 83 741 inhabitants (in 2017),  is the most populated municipality in the province and the third in the autonomous community after Albacete and Guadalajara .

Toledo History

The historic center is located on the right bank of the Tagus , on a hill one hundred meters high above the river, which girders at its base, forming a pronounced meander known as «Torno del Tajo». The municipality counts on neighborhoods very separated from the main nucleus: the one of Azucaica, in the right border of the river, that has its origin in an old district of the city, Separated by 7 km of the center of the city, whereas the one of Santa Maria Benquerencia, located practically opposite the previous one on the left bank of the Tagus, locates its center about 8 km from the city.

The history of the city goes back to the Bronze Age . It was an important center folder until its Roman conquest in 193 a. C. and remain various remains of Roman activity in the city, such as the aqueduct or the circus . After the Germanic invasions, the city would become with Leovigildo in capital and, later, in main ecclesiastical seat of the Visigothic Kingdom . In the year 711, after a moderate resistance, Toledo was conquered by the Muslims led by Táriq ibn Ziyad . During the Muslim rule, the old Visigothic capital was characterized by its opposition and individualism, materialized in the Taifa of Toledo. Alfonso VI reconquered the city in 1085. During the Modern Age the city stood out as the seat of the Catholic Monarchs and for their participation in the war of the Communities of Castile . When the court moved to Madrid in 1561 the city went into decline, accentuated by the economic crisis of the moment. Already in contemporary times, its fortress became a symbol of the Civil War due to its siege and defense. In 1983 it became the capital of Castilla-La Mancha , maintaining the capital of the province of Toledo.
